The Croatian National Bank has organised an event called "LESSONS FROM THE GREEK CRISIS". The event was held on 3 April 2023. The Greek crisis has demonstrated how economic policy mismanagement in the specific circumstances of disproportionately low interest rates in relation to the country's risk can have deep and far-reaching consequences for the economy and the society as a whole. That crisis also revealed numerous weaknesses in the architecture of the European Economic and Monetary Union.
A round table was held with the participation of Mr Servaas Deroose, former Deputy Director-General of DG ECFIN, European Commission, and Mr Poul Thomsen, former Director of the European Department, International Monetary Fund. They were both active participants in the negotiations and discussions on the Greek financial stabilization arrangements and they are among the most knowledgeable economic experts to discuss the causes and elements of resolving the Greek crisis. The round table also discussed the architecture of the European Economic and Monetary Union, its elements that have been upgraded in the meantime, but also the remaining open reform issues. Special attention was paid to the growing public debt in a number of European countries as well as to possible avenues to prevent future debt crises. In addition, the lessons for Croatia arising from Greek experiences were discussed too. The conversation was moderated by the Governor of the Croatian National Bank Mr Boris Vujčić.
Participation to the event was by invitation only.
