How to exchange kuna banknotes and coins?

Published: 14/6/2023

Kuna banknotes and coins can be exchanged at the branch offices of banks and HP-Hrvatska pošta d.d. (hereinafter: post office) and at the branch offices of the Financial Agency (hereinafter: Fina), which exchange kuna cash for euro cash using a fixed conversion rate of 1 euro = 7.53450 kuna.

When exchanging kuna cash for euro cash, banks, the post office and Fina do not charge a fee if a maximum of 100 banknotes and a maximum of 100 kuna coins are exchanged in a single transaction. Whether or not banks, the post office and Fina charge a fee for replacing quantities exceeding the above limit depends on their business policies. In addition, citizens may, without any restrictions or fees, exchange kuna cash into euro at banks for a period of 12 months after the date of the introduction of the euro, at the same time making a deposit into a euro account at a fixed conversion rate, subject to the regulations governing the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing.

From 1 January 2024, banks, the post office and Fina will cease to provide the service of exchanging kuna cash for euro cash, and kuna banknotes and coins will be exchangeable at the Croatian National Bank free of charge and without restrictions in quantity. The Croatian National Bank will exchange kuna banknotes without any time limit, while kuna coins can be exchanged within three years from the date of the introduction of the euro, i.e. by 31 December 2025 at the latest.
