CNB warns of fraud attempts

CNB warns of fraud attempts

Published: 17/2/2025

The CNB has been notified by citizens that they have received phone calls from persons unknown to them, who, acting like CNB employees, inquired about their income and offered them to exchange kuna for euro. Citizens have also reported telephone calls made by alleged CNB employees asking them to check the date of issue of eurobanknotes and warning them that banknotes issued before 2020 had to be replaced.

The CNB wishes to stress that the cash exchange by no means involves CNB employees making phone calls to citizens to verify data or visiting them in their homes to exchange banknotes.

The CNB therefore warns citizens that these calls constitute attempted fraud, most often targeted at the elderly population. In order for such fraud to be prevented, citizens are advised to exercise caution and make sure to report these incidents to the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia.

The CNB also stresses that all eurobanknotes in circulation are a valid means of payment and that no older banknotes are replaced by new ones. Citizens who have not yet exchanged kuna for euro can find a detailed description of the exchange procedure at the CNB's official website. If they have any additional inquiries, they can contact the CNB by e-mail at info@hnb.hr.
